Call for Aspiring Cultists,Random Upcoming Events, and a Quick Process Note
Hi there, everyone. First, a process note. As promised to the original lot of you, you have all been made honorary “paid” members of this site forever. I’ve made the switch basically because I’ve realized that I’m getting some free tickets to things and as the mailing list grows, I want to control who has access to ticket announcements to protect my sanity. All the reviews and upcomings are still free to everyone. For the most part, you won’t notice any change at all. And you can always pay if you want to for some reason I can’t discern.
I’m pushing one big event and a few small ones here. I’m probably going to catch all of them. Reviews are coming later this week as I finish my NoPro write-ups.
Team Activity
Cycult - Cycult is the new wacky checkpoint competition from one of my favorite groups, Shadow Traffic - famed for the Lost Horizon Night Market and Competitive Winter Picnicking. Original the Revelator (before Revel scooters went the way of Segways and Pets.com), this is a bike powered competition where you create a cult and then ride to challenges to prove your cultyness. It’s on June 8th at night and it’s free, but you have to dress up, ride something like 20 miles, and do dumb games for worthless points. I have a team of three already and I’m registering this week. If this is up your alley, let me know and you can … join us.
Upcoming Small Immersive
Mercer Labs - It’s on. May 21st at 5:15. Four of us (I think) are on board so far. More are welcome, especially now that there’s a crowd to mock it if we feel badly about wasting $50 on this thing.
Saga of the Shining Emblem - Andrew on this list mentioned this piece to me as an interesting one-person improv performance by Matthew Schott involving heavy audience interaction in the roleplaying vein. “Interesting,” if you’re unaware of the connotation on this list, does not mean good so much as it means doing something weird that’s worth knowing about. It’s cheap ($13) at the Brick Theatre. I’m going to do it on May 22nd at 8pm, and I’ll be happy to see if you there if you’re interested.
Convergent Waves - An immersive site-specific dance performance on a long ship in South Street Seaport. It’s free, so I don’t see why I wouldn’t check it out. It runs over Memorial Day in the afternoons. I’m not sure when I’m going — I’m happy to figure this out in coordination with others.
Inside Light — Ok, this one isn’t so small. Park Avenue Armory is putting on a performance of parts of Stockhausen’s Licht opera cycle in a two-part or marathon many hour experience of “transformative lighting and video projections to fully immerse the audience in the all-encompassing, octophonic sound and surroundings.” The Armory has done some cool stuff, so I’m willing to give this a shot. I’m still deciding if I want to try to chug it in one day or not, but I definitely want to see it somehow, and your potential participation could sway me in one direction or another. $85 for the marathon, $60 for each one, June 5th to 14th.
Still seeing Mannequin Pussy on May 16th and Third Law on May 17th for the late comers among you. Otherwise, look forward to reviews from me later this week. Stay safe out there.
